Stair Safety Decision Tool
Review the staircase, daily routines, mobility changes, and alternatives so your family can decide what deserves attention now — and what bigger stair decisions may need planning.
Are the stairs still working for everyday life?
Use this Tool to organize what is changing about stair use, what can be improved, and when it may be time to consider a stair lift, first-floor living, or professional assessment.
About this Stair Safety Decision Tool
Caregiver Compass™ Stair Safety Decision Tool is an educational and organizational tool. It helps families identify entrance barriers, compare possible routes, and prepare questions. It does not design a ramp, prescribe dimensions, determine code or ADA compliance, evaluate structural conditions, issue permit guidance, or replace an individualized professional assessment.
National Institute on Aging and CDC home-safety guidance recommend secure handrails on both sides of stairs, good lighting, clear steps, and prompt attention to loose or uneven stair surfaces.
