Sarasota–Bradenton Home Safety Resources for Aging Adults & Family Caregivers

Finding the right Home Safety help can depend on exactly where the home is located. Sarasota and Manatee counties use different aging-services networks, repair programs and permitting offices. Sarasota and Manatee counties use different aging-services networks

If you are not sure where to begin, start with the Area Agency on Aging / Aging and Disability Resource Center that serves the home’s county. These organizations help older adults, adults with disabilities and family caregivers connect with local services and understand available options.

Elder Helpline: 1-800-963-5337 (1-800-96-ELDER)

Program eligibility, waiting lists and service availability vary. The aging-services agency can explain current options but does not guarantee that a particular program will be available or funded.

REPAIR · ACCESSIBILITY · AGING AT HOME

Local programs may help with repairs, accessibility changes or urgent Home Safety needs

Repair assistance in Sarasota–Bradenton is highly location-specific. Some programs are open now, some are limited to a city or county, and others are temporarily closed. Use the home’s address to choose the correct program and confirm current funding and eligibility directly before making plans around assistance.

Caregiver Connect™ is building a preferred Home Safety professional network across Sarasota–Bradenton so families can have a simpler path to local professional help as territory coverage becomes active.

Families remain in control of whom they hire. Verify licensing, insurance, project scope, pricing and fit before authorizing work.

HURRICANE RECOVERY

If the home still has storm damage, check the current recovery window before assuming applications are open

Sarasota and Manatee counties both have major long-term hurricane-recovery programs. Application windows have changed over time.

Sarasota County · Resilient SRQ Housing Recovery

Sarasota County’s Resilient SRQ program administers long-term housing recovery for qualifying homeowners affected by recent hurricanes. For the 2024 storms — Debby, Helene and Milton — the county says the Housing Recovery Program has funding for rehabilitation, reconstruction and eligible reimbursement.

Current status. The 2024-storm Housing Recovery page currently states that it is not accepting new homeowner interest surveys. Existing applicants can continue through the application process and check status. Families who missed the intake window should use Resilient SRQ for current program updates rather than assuming a new application is available.

Manatee County · Lasting Manatee Home Recovery

Lasting Manatee is Manatee County’s federally funded long-term recovery program for homeowners affected by Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton. The Home Recovery Program was designed to support eligible repair, replacement and elevation of storm-damaged homes.

Current status. The county’s most recent published extension set August 31, 2026 as the pre-application deadline and September 30, 2026 as the full-application deadline. The current Lasting Manatee homepage emphasizes finishing an application or checking an existing application’s status.

BEFORE YOU HIRE

Verify the contractor before the project starts

A polished website, good review score or referral from a friend does not replace license verification. For projects that require licensed construction work, check the State of Florida record and then confirm any local registration or permitting requirements that apply to the property.

  1. Step 3: Match the professional to the project

Ask who will pull permits, who will perform electrical, plumbing or structural work, what insurance applies, what is excluded from the estimate and what happens if hidden conditions change the scope. Home Safety work may involve more than one licensed trade.

Caregiver Compass™ does not certify licensing, code compliance, accessibility compliance or contractor quality. Verify current credentials and project requirements directly.

WHO HANDLES MY PERMIT?

The correct permitting office depends on the home’s exact location

Do not use “Sarasota” or “Bradenton” as the only clue. A mailing address may not tell you which government has permitting authority. Confirm the property’s jurisdiction before submitting an application or assuming a project is permit-exempt.

Requirements vary by project and location. Confirm with the appropriate local authority.

PLAN BEFORE THE WARNING

If someone depends on medical equipment, mobility help or caregiver support, make the evacuation plan early

Special-needs registration and utility medical programs are planning tools — not guarantees of uninterrupted electricity, transportation or shelter placement. Complete registrations early and keep a backup plan for medications, power-dependent equipment, mobility devices and caregiver support.

  • Sarasota County

    Sarasota County Medical Needs Program

Sarasota County encourages residents with qualifying medical needs to register in advance. If accepted, registration helps the county plan for transportation and sheltering at a medically dependent evacuation center during a disaster.

Sarasota County states that a registered medically dependent person must bring a caregiver who can assist with activities of daily living, mobility, medications, treatments and other listed needs.

  • Manatee County

    Manatee County Special Needs Registry

Manatee County maintains a Special Needs Registry for residents who may require sheltering assistance during an evacuation. The county lists examples such as dependence on supplemental oxygen, electricity for survival and an official dementia or Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Applications are reviewed for approval.

    Annual registration is required.

  • FPL customers

    FPL Medically Essential Service

Florida Power & Light offers a Medically Essential Service program for qualifying residential customers who depend on electric-powered medical equipment and have the medical need certified by a Florida-licensed physician. The program can provide certain notices and support.

Enrollment does NOT guarantee uninterrupted electric service or priority restoration after a storm. FPL tells participants to maintain backup equipment and a backup power plan. Annual recertification is required.

WHEN DRIVING ISN’T AN OPTION

Transportation options differ by county

When driving is no longer practical, transportation can become part of the Home Safety plan. Sarasota and Manatee counties each operate eligibility-based transportation programs that may help qualified riders.

Sarasota County

Breeze Plus

Breeze Plus includes Sarasota County’s ADA, Transportation Disadvantaged and Veterans Medical programs. Eligibility varies by program. Sarasota County notes that the Transportation Disadvantaged program can serve people who lack reliable transportation or funds to secure it and who meet program criteria.

Manatee County

MCAT Handy Bus

Manatee County’s Handy Bus provides advanced-reservation, shared-ride transportation for qualified riders. ADA paratransit is designed for people who cannot use fixed-route buses because of a disability, and Manatee County also operates a Transportation Disadvantaged program with separate eligibility rules.

Manatee County currently describes the Handy Bus as a fare-free program. Verify current service hours, reservation rules and eligibility before planning a trip.

Home Safety professional coverage is expanding across Sarasota–Bradenton

Caregiver Connect™ is building a preferred Home Safety professional network by defined local service territory. Each territory is intended to have a professional pathway for families who want help with projects such as accessibility remodeling, bathroom changes, ramps, safer entries and other aging-at-home improvements.

Coverage is expanding. Professional inquiry routing activates only after the local Caregiver Connect™ partner has completed the required verification process and the territory is active.

Caregiver Connect™ uses the aging adult’s home street ZIP code — where the work will be performed — to determine the service territory.

Caregiver Connect™ does not replace a family’s own contractor due diligence. Families should review licensing, insurance, experience, written estimates, project scope, permit responsibility and overall fit before hiring any professional.

QUESTIONS FAMILIES ASK

Sarasota–Bradenton Home Safety FAQs

Which Area Agency on Aging serves Sarasota–Bradenton?

It depends on the county where the home is located. Sarasota County is served by the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, whose Elder Helpline is 866-413-5337. Manatee County is served by Senior Connection Center, whose Elder Helpline is 1-800-963-5337. Both can help older adults, adults with disabilities and family caregivers understand local services and current eligibility pathways.

Are home-repair assistance programs currently open in Sarasota or Bradenton?

Some are and some are not. Sarasota County announced a new SHIP home-purchase and rehabilitation funding round beginning September 1, 2026. The City of Bradenton announced SHIP rehabilitation funding with applications beginning September 25, 2026. The City of Sarasota currently says it has no city home-rehabilitation funding, and Manatee County’s separate SHIP homeowner rehabilitation/replacement program currently says applications are closed. Funding can change quickly, so confirm current status directly before relying on assistance.

How do I know which building department handles a Home Safety project?

Use the property’s exact jurisdiction, not just the mailing city. Sarasota County, Manatee County and incorporated cities such as Sarasota, North Port, Venice, Bradenton, Palmetto, Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach maintain their own permitting resources. Longboat Key also maintains its own Building Division. Requirements vary by project and location, so confirm with the appropriate local authority before work begins.

Can local programs help with ramps or other accessibility changes?

Possibly. The City of Bradenton’s current SHIP notice specifically includes barrier-removal accessibility modifications. Suncoast Center for Independent Living also provides portable modular wheelchair ramps and durable medical-equipment loans for qualifying people with disabilities in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Other repair programs may cover safety or accessibility work depending on eligibility, funding and project scope.

What should we do if an aging adult depends on electric-powered medical equipment?

Build a backup power and evacuation plan before a storm. Sarasota County operates a Medical Needs Program and Manatee County maintains a Special Needs Registry. Florida Power & Light also offers Medically Essential Service for qualifying customers with physician-certified electric medical needs. FPL specifically states that enrollment does not guarantee uninterrupted power or priority restoration, so backup equipment and another power plan remain important.

How does Caregiver Connect™ decide which Sarasota–Bradenton territory a home belongs to?

Caregiver Connect™ routes Home Safety inquiries by the aging adult’s home street ZIP code — the address where the work will be performed. Sarasota–Bradenton is divided into four internal service territories: North Manatee & Lakewood Ranch; West Bradenton, Islands & Longboat Key; Sarasota, Siesta Key & Osprey; and Venice, Englewood & North Port. Internal ZIP lists and partner-routing details are not published.
