CAREGIVER COMPASS™ · FLORIDA

Homosassa Springs & Citrus County Caregiver Resources

Practical local help for meals, transportation, respite, home safety, repair assistance and storm planning — for older adults and the people who care for them.

Start with the task that has become difficult. Whether you need a ride to an appointment, help at home or a break from caregiving, you do not have to solve everything at once. Use the physical address to confirm which programs serve your household.
One manageable step

Tell someone what has changed.

Maybe a parent has stopped cooking, a spouse needs help bathing, or you are managing everything from another city. Start with the problem you need help with, even if you do not know the name of a program.

A simple opening script

“I care for someone in Citrus County. We need help with [daily task]. The biggest concern is [specific problem]. What can we apply for, what is the next step, and what can we use while we wait?”

Before the call: have the physical address, safe callback number, age, daily support needs and preferred language ready. Ask how to submit any financial or medical documents securely. Write down the staff member’s name, next step and follow-up date.

Home repair and accessibility

Contact Citrus County Housing Services at 352-527-7520 about SHIP home repair assistance. The county lists accessibility alterations among eligible repairs, subject to program scope and funding.

Ask about income and ownership requirements, application availability, approved work and repayment conditions if you later sell, rent, refinance or transfer the home. Do not assume general remodeling is covered.

Veteran home adaptations

Ask the veteran’s VA care team about HISA for medically justified home alterations and whether other disability housing grants may fit. Programs have different eligibility and application requirements.

Confirm the approval process before starting work or paying a contractor.

A safer place to live

Start with the daily route through home.

Walk through the tasks that are difficult with the person receiving care: getting in the door, reaching the bathroom at night, bathing and moving between rooms. Ask their clinician whether an occupational therapy home assessment would help.

Clear the path

Remove loose clutter and cords from walking routes. Address loose rugs and poor lighting. Keep frequently used items within easy reach.

Make the bathroom a priority

Discuss properly installed grab bars and nonslip surfaces. Choose bathing equipment and transfer arrangements around the person’s abilities and care plan.

Plan the larger changes

For ramps, doorway changes or a curbless shower, request an on-site assessment and written scope. The layout, mobility device, drainage and structure matter.

Home fall-prevention starting points: CDC guidance. Discuss falls, dizziness and medication concerns with a health professional.

Before you hire a home-modification contractor

  1. Match the identity. Check the legal business and qualifying contractor against the written proposal. Use Florida DBPR’s license-verification route and confirm authority for the location and work.
  2. Confirm the exact job. Ask for recent examples of the same type of accessibility work. Bathroom remodeling alone does not establish ramp or structural doorway experience.
  3. Get the terms in writing. Ask for insurance evidence, required permits, materials, payment milestones, change orders, schedule, cleanup and warranty terms.
  4. Protect the care routine. Agree on access to a usable bathroom, safe paths, pets, dust control, worker arrival and who to contact if work stops.
About partner status

This resource guide does not list any contractor as an approved or verified Caregiver Connect partner. A business website, review score or license claim alone does not establish partner approval.

Plan before the forecast changes

A storm plan that includes the caregiver.

For households in Homosassa, Ozello, Crystal River and across the county, plan around the actual address, mobility needs and medical equipment. A caregiver service area is not an evacuation zone.

  1. Know where you will go. Review the county evacuation planning map (PDF) and current official instructions. Do not assume a listed shelter is open.
  2. Ask about special-needs registration. Call Citrus County Emergency Operations at 352-249-2753 if medical support or transport may be needed and you lack another option. Discuss essential needs with the clinician and keep registry details current. Registration and shelter guidance.
  3. Make an equipment plan. Ask the equipment supplier and care team how to handle a power outage, charging, oxygen and medication storage. Identify a backup caregiver and transportation arrangement.
  4. Pack the care information. Keep a current medication list, contacts, care instructions, device supplies, identification and essential documents ready. Include the caregiver’s needs and confirm arrangements for pets.

Registration is a planning step, not a replacement for following evacuation orders or calling 911 in an emergency.

Questions caregivers ask

A few answers before you call.

Where should a Citrus County caregiver start?

Call Elder Options at 800-262-2243 for help identifying local support, screening and referrals. Explain the care recipient’s county, daily assistance needs and what has changed.

How do I ask for Meals on Wheels?

Contact Citrus County Support Services at 352-527-5900 and ask for a Meals on Wheels assessment. The county describes service for homebound adults age 60 and older. Ask about cost, dietary needs and delivery arrangements for the specific address.

Can I get help paying for a ramp or accessibility repair?

Ask Citrus County Housing Services at 352-527-7520 about SHIP eligibility, the proposed repair, available funding and repayment conditions before authorizing work. Veterans can also ask their VA care team about HISA or other housing adaptation benefits. Assistance is not guaranteed.

Does this page list verified Caregiver Connect partners?

No. This page lists public and community resources. No contractor is presented here as an approved or verified Caregiver Connect partner.

Does a ZIP code guarantee service?

No. A mailing ZIP, Census ZIP tabulation area and county boundary are different things. Give the provider the physical address and confirm service area, accessibility and availability directly.

How do I prepare for an evacuation with medical equipment?

Discuss equipment, medication and backup-power needs with the care team. Contact Citrus County Emergency Operations at 352-249-2753 about special-needs registration and transportation. Follow current official evacuation instructions and confirm which shelters are open.
